What is the microbiome?
The skin microbiome is simply the microbial flora of our skin. This ecosystem, unique to each individual, is highly complex, and research into it keeps advancing. But we now know that helping preserve its balance helps keep skin looking healthy!
This collection of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi...), which at first glance may not seem very appealing, is often associated with several key roles: the skin's defenses, its barrier, and immune regulation. When this flora is thrown off balance — by pollution, temperature swings, stress, excessive washing, or a poor diet — skin can look and feel less balanced (dry-looking skin, oily-looking skin, flaking...), and an imbalanced microbiome is sometimes associated with skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, or atopic dermatitis.
We can then appreciate how important it is to care for the skin microbiome, like any other ecosystem: by helping protect it, we help support the look and feel of a stronger skin barrier — one that looks better able to resist the settling of unwanted or undesirable microorganisms.
Protecting the microbiome: probiotics and prebiotics
Cosmetic care can be formulated with probiotics or prebiotics to help rebalance the look and feel of the skin flora. But what's the difference?
We're familiar with the probiotics in yogurt that improve the quality of the gut flora an intake of bacteria that strengthen or maintain the balance of the gut ecosystem.
