As you explore the exciting world of cosmetics, it's essential to remember that the world is constantly evolving, turning resolutely toward sustainability notably by offering sustainable cosmetic products.
Sustainable development is defined as:
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.
Sustainability is often associated directly with the environment, yet it comprises three dimensions:
- Economic profitability and growth
- Preservation of the environment
- Social inclusion and equity
When you talk about a sustainable cosmetic brand or product, keep these three aspects in mind and build them into your product's development.
Before learning more about the pillars, see how we at TECHNATURE have put sustainability into practice in the video below.
The first pillar: economic profitability and growth
Sustainability and economic growth may look like opposites, when in fact the two are complementary and both important to the development of our society.
Sustained, shared economic growth can drive progress, create decent jobs for all, and raise everyone's standard of living. So it matters for you but also for your employees, suppliers, and partners that your product and brand be profitable and grow over the years, giving your project stability.
Preservation of the environment
This pillar is naturally and strongly tied to sustainability. The goal is to develop a cosmetic product that does not harm the environment.
The entire product-development process must be analyzed. The second pillar therefore applies to the raw-material supply chain, the manufacturing process, and also the product's use and end of life.
Take one of our products as an example: a powder Shower Gel.
- Sourcing: This product's raw materials are naturally derived, and 45.9% come from organic farming. The raw-material suppliers are located in France. Transport is by road, with carriers implementing many measures to reduce their greenhouse-gas emissions. The delivery platform sits on the same site as production.
- Manufacturing/Packaging: The manufacturing site is combined with the packaging site, located less than 40 m from the raw-material receiving and storage platform. Because the product is in powder form, we use no water to make it, which reduces our water consumption. Packaging is done in kraft sachets with a label.
- End of life: Once packaged, the product is delivered to our customers' logistics platforms. Delivery may be by combined rail-road or by road, depending on the destination. Finally, at the end customer's home, the product is used in powder form directly in the shower. Once again, we limit the amount of water used, and the kraft sachet goes into the paper recycling bin.
The social pillar
On social inclusion and equity, there are several aspects to work on. You can act on inclusion among your employees or subcontractors: people with disabilities, refugees, young people, and people from priority neighborhoods.
You can also donate part of your profits to nonprofits working on these themes.
You can work on the supply chain of your raw materials or product, too explaining that a given material comes from a particular country, helping employ a local community, and so on.
There are many ways a brand can get involved.
Take TECHNATURE's WOW Impact approach as an example:
Our WOW Impact approach (the company's CSR policy) means exemplary social conduct toward our employees. We promote diversity across our staff:
- age,
- background,
- gender,
- disability status,
- and more.
Developing a sustainable cosmetics brand
Today it's essential to factor in sustainability when creating a beauty brand or product.
More than 8 in 10 French people feel concerned by sustainability. That's the audience you'll reach by developing a responsible cosmetic product.
In conclusion, the future is sustainable, and it's within reach. By integrating the pillars of sustainability —
- Economic profitability,
- Preservation of the environment, and
- Social inclusion
into the creation of a cosmetics brand, you build an essential path to success.
